Knotting for beginners

Build an elegant necklace in this simple project

Elegant is not my usual look, but this necklace and earrings garnered so much attention, I’ve made them in lots of color combinations. If you want a novice knotting project, this is the one for you. It looks great and is simple to build around the sleek shape of a CZ drop.

Supplies

Necklace 19 in. (48 cm)

  • 18–36 mm cubic zirconia (CZ) pendant
  • 8–12 8 mm crystal rondelles
  • 16–24 6 mm round crystals
  • 16–24 4 mm bicone crystals
  • 2 g 11/0 seed beads
  • 18–24 in. (46–61 cm) C-lon thread or braiding string
  • 2 4–6 mm jump rings
  • 2 crimp ends
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 2 in. (5 cm) chain for extender, 2–3 mm links
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers, or 2 pairs of chainnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • Bead Fix adhesive

Earrings

  • 2 8 mm crystal rondelles
  • 4 6 mm round crystals 
  • 4 4 mm bicone crystals 
  • 12 11/0 seed beads
  • 12 in. (30 cm) C-lon thread or braiding string
  • 2 crimp ends
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers, or 2 pairs of chainnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • Bead Fix adhesive

Instructions:

1. Cut an 18–24-in. (46–61 cm) piece of thread or braiding string. Center a pendant.

2. On each end, string: 11/0 seed bead, bicone crystal, 11/0, round crystal, 11/0, crystal rondelle, 11/0, round, 11/0, bicone, 11/0. Tie an overhand knot next to the last 11/0.

3a. On each side, about 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the knot, tie an overhand knot.     

3b. Repeat steps 2 and 3a until the necklace is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

4. Check the fit and trim the excess thread. Apply glue and string a crimp end. Flatten the crimp portion of the crimp end.

Open a jump ring. Attach a lobster claw clasp and a crimp end. Close the jump ring. Repeat on the other end, substituting a chain for the clasp.
Tip!
Use the tip of your roundnose pliers to push the beads together as you tighten each knot.

Earrings: 1. Cut a 6-in. (15 cm) piece of thread or braiding string. String: 11/0 seed bead, bicone crystal, 11/0, round crystal, 11/0, crystal rondelle, 11/0, round, 11/0, bicone, 11/0. Center the beads.

2. Tie an overhand knot next to the first and last 11/0.

3. Trim the excess thread. Apply glue and string a crimp end over both ends. Flatten the crimp portion of the crimp end.

4. Open the loop of an earring wire and attach the dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring to match the first.
