With only a few supplies, contemporary pearl and leather jewelry comes together seamlessly. By varying the leather color and pearl placement, you can fashion graduated multistrands, trendy cuffs, and cascading earrings. Plus this bead-and-loop closure will give you adjustable-length jewelry that’s out of this world!

Click through the gallery below for step-by-step instructions on making the necklace, or download the full project PDF above.

What you’ll need

Necklace 16 in. (41 cm)

  • 12–17 8–10 mm large-hole pearls
  • 6 ft. (1.83 m) leather cord, 1 mm diameter
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • Super New Glue
  • waxed paper

Kits available from Ayla’s Originals, aylasoriginals.com.

Tip!

Apply glue sparingly, just a drop or two at a time. When gluing coils or securing strands, allow 2 to 3 minutes for them to dry. When gluing pearls in place on the necklace, allow 1 to 2 minutes before gluing the next pearl, and allow 2 to 3 minutes before starting the next strand. Don’t rush the gluing or drying process, or you’ll risk the strands sticking together.
