Resin, ribbon, and rivets necklace

Unite varied materials in a harmonious design

My design process is pretty unorthodox — throwing lots of things on a table and noticing how they fall. Seeing components side by side, at random, offers serendipitous surprises and cool combinations I wouldn’t have thought of initially. For this necklace the mix of metals, hard and soft textures, and matte and shiny finishes may seem at odds, but they come together in a well balanced and deliberately simple design.

INSTRUCTIONS

Components: Resined tube

Step 1
Cut a piece of paper to fit around a tube bead. Use a paintbrush to apply a layer of glue to the back of the paper. Wrap the paper around the tube, smoothing it to remove any bubbles. Allow the glue to dry. Cover the paper with two or three coats of glue, allowing the glue to dry after each application.

Step 2
Place the tube on waxed paper. Mix Ice Resin according to the package directions. Apply resin to the tube and allow it to dry (Tip, below). Apply additional layers as desired, allowing the resin to dry after each application.

Resined paper
Cut a piece of paper a little smaller than a two-to-one connector. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of glue to the front and back of the paper, allowing the glue to dry after each application. Apply Ice Resin to the front and back of the paper, allowing the resin to dry after each application.

Tip
After the resin has set a bit, suspend the tube on a drinking straw to dry completely.
Riveted connector

Step 1
On a connector, mark where you will drill a hole for a rivet. Mark a corresponding point on the resined paper.

Step 2
Using a riveting system, align the point of the piercing pin with the mark on the connector. Slowly rotate the T-handle clock-wise until you’ve drilled a hole. Turn the handle counterclockwise to release the connector. Repeat with the resined paper.
Tip!

Riveting tip: When using the flaring side of the riveting system, begin by holding the tool with the T-handle on the bottom — this prevents the components from falling out during the flaring process.

Step 3
Stack a rivet, a spacer, the resined paper, and the connector. Align the stacked components with the flaring side of the riveting system (Riveting tip, above).

Step 4
Slowly rotate the T-handle clockwise so that the nose of the flaring punch lines up with the opening in the rivet. Once aligned, continue turning until the rivet is flared. Turn the handle counter-clockwise to release the riveted components.
Assembling the Necklace

Step 1
Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of 22- or 24-gauge wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. String a bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop. On a head pin, string a bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop.

Step 2
On one end of the connector unit from step 1, attach a charm. On the other end, attach the bottom loop of the riveted connector. Complete the wraps.

Step 3
Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of chain and open an end link as you would a jump ring. Attach a loop of the connector and close the link. String the resined tube on the chain. Attach the remaining end link and loop of the connector.

Step 4
Cut a 21–25-in. (51–64 cm) piece of ribbon and center the resined tube. On each end, string a jump ring and fold back the ribbon. Cut two 5–6-in. (13–15 cm) pieces of 22- or 24-gauge wire. Use your fingers and pliers to wrap a wire around each folded ribbon end. Tuck the end of each wire.

Step 5
On each end, use a jump ring to attach the jump ring from step 4 and half of a toggle clasp.

Step 6
Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of chain. Attach an end link and the loop half of the clasp. Attach the head pin unit and the remaining end link.
