Metal clay dries rapidly, so remove only the amount you will use during a given work session. Store unused clay in an airtight container with a small piece of moist sponge or paper towel. Cover clay with plastic wrap while you are not working with it. Use a spray bottle to remoisten the clay if it begins to dry out.
Apply olive oil or hand balm to your hands, tools, and work surface to prevent the clay from sticking. To roll clay out to a uniform thickness, place it between two even stacks of playing cards or between two strips of mat board. Roll the clay with an acrylic roller or PVC tube (Figure), rotate the clay 90°, and roll it again.
