A Gallery of Beaded Boxes

A slideshow of stunning student work
Cynthia Rutledge

We're so pleased to share a slideshow of the work created during a Master Class at the Bead&Button Show in June of 2018. Cynthia Rutledge, a contemporary seed bead artist specializing in peyote stitch and off-loom weaving techniques, taught this class where beadwork and metal met in the middle. Her students spent three days in Milwaukee learning to cut metal to create a souvenir box with seed beads and Delicas, CZs and pearls, and more.

Cynthia shared with us her idea behind this class:

When asked to teach a Master Class, I knew pretty much right then what I wanted to offer. I had been thinking about creating a series of 18th inspired portrait, souvenir and snuff boxes. Delicate works of art collected by kings, queens, tzars and the wealthy. I also thought that if I blended beadwork with metal, that this winning combination would be a great idea. I wanted to offer a surprise to the beading community, as this kind of work is not what I am known for!

Students from all over the world participated in this class. They constructed three different box shapes (round, oval, and triangular), and embellished them to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. We were lucky enough to collect these amazing photos of her students' finished work. They are also featured in the Your Work section of the April 2019 issue of Bead&Button magazine!
